Lil Kim and Big Mac?
According to this article in The Age, McDonalds will pay for hip-hop stars to mention Big Mac in their lyrics. There are a few things that irk me about this, but nothing moreso than the reference to the Big Mac as a "sandwich" in the article. Oh that does sound healthy.
Apparently, according to The Age (quoting Advertising Age magazine), hip-hopper are no strangers to mentioning brands in their lyrics: "Bentley, Porsche, Gucci and Dom Perignon have all been referenced by rap stars Jay-Z, 50 Cent and Snoop Dogg." I think a reasonably large point has been missed here - rappers refer to prestige brands to confirm their rise to wealth. And fans, in turn, consume and endorse these brands to get easy cred. Somehow I doubt that Busta Rhymes and Puff Daddy singing "Pass the Big Mac sandwich" would drive as many sales as the similar lyric did for Courvoisier.
I wonder if this is a water-tight offer? I would like to pen a rap lyric which mentions Big Mac (in all sorts of ways), kick back and wait for my royalties to come in, then cash em in and buy the Snoop-endorsed Chrysler 300C. I am so gangster (don't let the Elsternwick digs fool you).
